Regional Industrial Development Corp. of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a private development nonprofit organization that works to enhance the potential for job growth, is working on a number of initiatives that are re-purposing and redeveloping outdated and underused properties in the region, according to Dr. Donald Smith, president. The company has about seven million square feet of properties in its portfolio, with a substantial development pipeline.
“Many of the projects we tackle are ones where the public benefit is better than the private benefit. They are not financially attractive – they’re in distressed communities or are on brownfield sites that are being developed. You need a patient approach and you also need partners to make these projects works,” he said.
